Dead Letters

フィンランドはヘルシンキ出身の哀愁ロックバンドの本邦デビューとなる5th。ちょっぴりハスキーで甘～い声質がステキなラウリ・ヨーネンが歌い上げる薄暗くゴスなメロディをふんだんに盛り込んだ胸キュン(死語？)メロディック・ロックを展開し、オルタナならではの荒く重心のあるサウンドと共に哀メロ満載の良曲連発にすっかり骨抜きにされる。一度聴いたらなかなか離れられないキャッチーさが中毒を誘う好盤。日本盤はボーナス多めでお得なのでこちらを推奨。

かなりいい隠れた名盤。いや、有名か?
声質はそこまで好きではないが、
この声のおかげでかえって彼らの独自性を出せたのではないかな。

アルバム1、あるいはThe Rasmus屈指の明るいトーンの曲。「影の中」にいるとは思えません。
自分の趣味からすると明るすぎるかな、と思って聴いてたら、気付いた頃には癖になってました。それぐらい病みつきになるメロディーです。

オルゴールを思わせるキーボード&重いギターメロディの元ネタは、『くるみ割り人形』の「金平糖の精の踊り」でしょうか。
クラシック的な背景(『くるみ割り人形』はバレエですが)が感じられる曲に、Apocalypticaのゲスト起用は正解みたいです。

80年代だったら日本で大ヒットしたであろうアルバム。いやFAIR WARNINGが売れたことを考えたら90年代でもイケたかな。とにかくメロディーが美しい。
